stability ball

The stability ball provides an unstable surface that stimulates postural muscles more intensely than doing the same exercises on a static base. This class will improve your abdominal strength and joint stability as well as maximising calories burnt during a bodyweight resistance workout.

The Swiss ball or gym ball has become an important and increasingly popular low cost piece of equipment for both clinical practice and home based exercise programmes. Because the ball is not a stable surface the deep stability muscles, so important for spinal stability, are exercised more effectively in a work out on a Swiss ball. Exercise becomes not only physically and mentally challenging but also fun. An exercise programme on a Swiss ball can provide a cardiovascular workout, weight (resistance) training, stretching, core stability training and postural and biomechanical re-education. Recent research has shown that abdominal muscle retraining is more effective on a Swiss ball than on a fixed surface. (Phys Ther. 2000 Jun80(6):564-9). At e s physical health we organize small group Swiss ball classes and home exercise programmes individually designed for specific problems.
